The volcano in context
Tavurvur is one vent inside a much larger caldera
Tavurvur is part of the Rabaul Caldera, a large volcanic system surrounding Simpson Harbour. Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program describes the caldera as roughly 8 by 14 kilometres and notes that Tavurvur and Vulcan are two of the historically important vents within the system.
On 19 September 1994, Tavurvur and Vulcan erupted in the same crisis. Ash blanketed Rabaul, the town was temporarily abandoned, and the disaster accelerated the shift of administration and business toward Kokopo.
