If your Papua New Guinea visa application is still pending, the most useful approach is to confirm that the application was successfully lodged, check the official eVisa status page, watch for requests from ICA and avoid making unnecessary duplicate applications while the existing file is still active.

Use 10 working days as the published baseline—not a universal 48–72 hours

ICA's visa information booklet states that the turnaround time for visa applications is 10 working days if all requirements are met.

That does not guarantee every application will take exactly ten working days. Some electronic applications may move faster, while cases involving missing documents, medical or character checks, employment sponsorship, manual verification or other circumstances can take longer.

Planning rule: count working days rather than calendar days, allow for PNG public holidays, and avoid building a non-refundable departure around an assumed 48–72 hour approval.

Check the official status page

ICA's immigration handbook directs applicants to its online eVisa status follow-up service. Use your own reference details rather than relying only on inbox notifications.

Watch your registered email

Keep an eye on the email account used for the application, including spam and junk folders, for any request for clarification or additional evidence.

Confirm payment was accepted

If your portal indicates payment is incomplete, follow the official payment instructions. Do not assume a bank authorization automatically means the visa application entered processing.

Keep your evidence ready

Have a clear passport copy, travel itinerary, accommodation and any visa-class-specific evidence available in case ICA asks for further information.

Avoid unnecessary duplicate applications

A second application can create another record and another fee. If your first file is still active, use ICA's follow-up route before lodging a replacement unless the portal specifically instructs you to start again.

Keep your travel plans flexible

A pending application is not permission to travel. Do not treat a payment receipt, reference number or submitted status as an approved entry permit.

A poor passport scan, incomplete form or missing visa-class document may require clarification before ICA can finish the assessment.

Medical or character review

ICA states that additional medical or police documentation can be requested depending on purpose, duration and individual circumstances.

Business

Sponsor or employment verification

Working and sponsored categories can involve company, work-permit and sponsor-portal checks that are not part of a simple visitor assessment.

Payment

Payment not fully lodged

An incomplete or unsuccessful payment can prevent final lodgement. Use the portal's own payment/status information to determine whether action is required.

Calendar

Weekends and public holidays

ICA's published turnaround is in working days, so weekends and public holidays do not count the same way as calendar days.

Further assessment

A visa application can require additional verification even when the applicant has uploaded all obvious documents.

Duplicate applications

Do not claim the system automatically “resets your queue”

It is sensible to avoid filing a second application while the first is still pending, but ICA's public guidance does not state that a duplicate automatically resets your queue position, locks your account or cancels the first application.

The more defensible advice is simple: do not pay for another application unless ICA or the portal tells you that a new application is required.

If you discover a material mistake after submission, use ICA's enquiry or status-follow-up process rather than trying to correct it by creating competing files on your own.

PNGDAC while your visa is pending

The arrival card and visa are separate processes

PNGDAC is not a visa

ICA explicitly states that the PNG Digital Arrival Card does not replace an entry permit.

Timing

ICA's public-facing system says PNGDAC can be submitted up to 72 hours before arrival.

Boarding enforcement

The 6 August 2026 directive requires completion before the airline issues a boarding pass.

If your visa is still pending and your flight is close, completing PNGDAC does not solve the missing visa problem. Where your passport requires an issued visa before travel, wait for the visa decision or contact ICA.

Things you can finish before the visa decision arrives

Passport check

ICA requires at least six months of passport validity from the intended entry date.

Travel itinerary

Keep your planned arrival, accommodation and onward travel evidence organized. ICA may request evidence depending on circumstances.

Accommodation details

Make sure the address and contact details you intend to use are accurate and match the application where applicable.

Health documents

Check whether your itinerary triggers any yellow-fever certificate requirement and prepare any medical documents relevant to your visa class.

Offline copies

Once approved, save the visa PDF offline and carry a printed backup. Do not rely on airport connectivity for access to important documents.

Airport transfer

If travelling soon after approval, pre-arrange accommodation and airport pickup but choose flexible bookings where possible.

Monitor without overreacting

Confirm payment and reference details, check email, and use the official status page. A few working days of waiting is not unusual.

Around day 10

Compare with ICA's published baseline

If ten working days have passed and the application is complete, use ICA's official status or enquiry channels to request clarification.

Flight approaching

Do not travel on a pending status

If your passport requires an advance visa and approval has not been issued, contact ICA and your airline before departure. A pending reference is not an entry permit.

Payment

A bank charge alone does not tell you the visa status

ICA's published guidance says visa fees are payable online and that fees are generally non-refundable if an application is unsuccessful.

If your bank shows a charge but the portal still displays a payment-related issue, use the application dashboard or ICA support channel before attempting another transaction. Avoid repeatedly clicking a payment button because it can create confusion over duplicate charges.

Read the officer's instructions carefully and provide exactly what is requested through the authorized channel.

Common questions while waiting

How long should a PNG visa take?

ICA's visa information booklet gives a turnaround time of 10 working days when all requirements are met. Individual applications can be faster or slower.

Does “Pending” mean my visa will be approved?

No. It means a final approval has not yet been issued. Do not make travel decisions as though a pending application were an approved permit.

Should I submit another application after 72 hours?

No. There is no official rule saying a visitor application must be decided within 72 hours. ICA's published baseline is 10 working days when requirements are met.

Can a duplicate application lock my account?

ICA's public guidance does not state that duplicates automatically lock an account or reset a queue. However, duplicate applications can create extra records and additional fees, so use the official follow-up route first.

Where can I check my application?

ICA's immigration handbook provides an online visa-application status follow-up service through the official eVisa system.

Can I complete PNGDAC before my visa is approved?

PNGDAC is a separate border declaration. It does not approve a visa. Complete it within the live system's allowed timing and before boarding-pass issuance, but do not travel if an advance visa remains pending.

Do I need two blank passport pages?

ICA's current FAQ clearly publishes the six-month passport-validity rule, but it does not state a universal two-facing-blank-pages requirement in that FAQ. Follow any additional instructions attached to your visa class or passport.

Do I have to print every travel document?

Keeping printed backups is sensible, especially for the visa approval and itinerary, but ICA's public guidance does not support a blanket claim that all electronic copies are rejected at the border.
