Cultural diversity
PNG culture is local before it is national
Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority describes the country as having more than 800 languages and many distinct traditions. That diversity means etiquette can shift between Port Moresby, the Highlands, the Sepik, Milne Bay, New Ireland, Bougainville and the many smaller island communities.
Visitors should therefore avoid sweeping claims about what “Papua New Guineans always do.” Local hosts, elders, guides and operators are the best source for community-specific rules.
