Document planning before you apply

Papua New Guinea Visa Requirements

PNG visa requirements depend on what you are coming to do. A holiday applicant may need a relatively small visitor file, while a business, specialist or employment case can require sponsor, company, professional, police or medical evidence.

  • Passport validity: at least 6 months from intended entry
  • Visa route depends on nationality, passport type and purpose
  • Return travel and funds are not universal uploads for every applicant
  • PNGDAC is separate from the visa itself

Broad entry requirements

A valid passport comes first

Everyone travelling to Papua New Guinea must use a valid and approved travel document. ICA says a passport must be valid for at least six months from the date the traveller intends to enter PNG.

Foreign travellers also need the immigration permission that matches their passport and travel purpose. Some eligible travellers can obtain a visa on arrival; others must secure the appropriate visa before travel.

One checklist does not fit every visa. ICA can request additional evidence depending on the visa class and individual circumstances.

Not universal requirements

Important evidence is not always mandatory for every applicant

Keep class-specific evidence ready without incorrectly labelling it as compulsory across the whole PNG visa system.

Return or onward ticket

ICA's FAQ says return-travel evidence may be requested in some circumstances. Several business and work-related classes expressly require it.

Proof of funds

Some visa classes require or may request financial-support evidence. A bank statement is not a blanket requirement for every eVisa applicant.

Accommodation

Hotel or host details can support a genuine visitor application, but the live Easy Visitor Permit core checklist does not require a hotel receipt from every applicant.

Requirements by purpose

The document pack grows with the complexity of the visa

Visitor documents

Holiday applicants should prove a genuine temporary visit

ICA's visitor rules require the applicant to be a genuine tourist or visitor who intends to leave PNG at the end of the stay. Depending on the case, ICA may request evidence supporting that purpose.

For the online Easy Visitor Permit, the live class instructions require the application, online lodgement fee and passport biodata page. Keep return travel, accommodation and host details available in case the class or assessor requests them.

30-day and 60-day routes have different eligibility and extension rules

Both are single-entry visitor visas, but they should not be described as the same product.

Business documents

The sponsor letter should explain the real business visit

PNG sponsor / associate letter

  • Purpose of visit
  • Business location
  • Expected stay
  • Frequency of visits where relevant

Applicant records

  • Passport biodata page
  • Travel dates
  • Return / ongoing ticket
  • Any evidence requested by ICA

Purpose boundary

  • Meetings are business
  • Ordinary employment needs a work route
  • Technical labour may need REV
  • Longer work may need Working Resident

Employment documents

Working Resident applications require company and employee evidence

ICA's current Employment process is employer-led through the Sponsor Portal.

Company evidence

Current ICA requirements include incorporation evidence, IPA company extract, foreign-enterprise certification where applicable, company structure and a PNG sponsor letter.

Worker evidence

Passport biodata page, CV, qualifications, job description, signed employment contract and recent passport-sized photo are among the current requirements.

Character and health

ICA's current Employment checklist includes Police Clearance Certificate, Medical Examination Report and PNG professional registration where applicable.

Restricted Employment

Short specialist work needs evidence of the skills gap

ICA says an REV applicant must demonstrate specialist technical skills required to fill a short-term skills gap in PNG. The dossier should explain the specialist task and why the worker's expertise is needed.

Short does not automatically mean business. A brief hands-on engineering or technical assignment can still be employment.

Health and character

Medical and police records are class-specific

Employment applications can require police and medical evidence. Other classes may require health or character checks based on purpose, duration and individual circumstances.

Yellow fever requirements depend on travel history and current public-health rules rather than the visa class alone.

File preparation

Use readable files, not invented global limits

There is no reliable basis for one website-wide rule such as “all files must be under 10 MB” or “all filenames must contain no spaces.”

Readable scans

Keep the full page visible and make names, passport numbers, signatures and dates readable.

Live upload controls

Follow the format and size limit shown in the actual ICA upload field for the selected class.

Keep originals

Retain source files in case ICA asks for a clearer or replacement copy.

Application sequence

Build the application in the right order

1

Identify the purpose

Tourism, business, employment and specialist activity use different visa families.

2

Check passport eligibility

Confirm eVisa, paper, mission, sponsor-led or VOA availability.

3

Build the class-specific pack

Start with the passport, then add only the evidence the route needs.

4

Check the live fee

Use current ICA class and payment information.

5

Submit through the correct channel

Some classes are online; others are sponsor-led, paper or mission based.

6

Answer evidence requests

ICA can ask for additional documents when the case needs clarification.

7

Verify the approval

Check passport details, class, entries and stay conditions.

8

Prepare for arrival

PNGDAC and declarations are separate from the visa application.

PNG Digital Arrival Card

PNGDAC is an arrival requirement, not the visa

ICA's 6 August 2026 directive requires travellers to complete PNGDAC before boarding-pass issuance for travel into Papua New Guinea. ICA also states that the PNGDAC is free and does not replace a visa.

ICA's PNGDAC FAQ currently says transit passengers who do not enter PNG do not need one, and that the system is currently available to travellers arriving by air into Jacksons International Airport.

Do not call PNGDAC an eVisa document. It is a separate passenger declaration and border-processing requirement.

Visa on Arrival

Not every traveller must obtain the visa online before departure

ICA currently offers Visa on Arrival to a defined list of countries and territories, with passport-type restrictions for some nationalities.

Mainland New Zealand, France and the United States are specifically noted as not eligible for VOA even though some of those passports can qualify for electronic visitor routes.

Approval copy

Keep the visa accessible without inventing a colour-print mandate

Save the original decision and verify the passport number, name, entries and stay. A printed backup is useful but current ICA guidance does not establish a universal colour-hard-copy-only rule.

Digital original

Keep the official approval available offline.

Printed backup

Carry a clear paper copy for redundancy.

Supporting records

Keep relevant sponsor, return-travel, host or employment evidence accessible.

Common mistakes

Avoid turning old advice into universal visa rules

Start with passport, purpose and visa class

Once those three are clear, you can identify whether the case needs visitor evidence or a larger sponsor, business, employment, health or specialist dossier.
