Goroka Airport | Eastern Highlands Arrival Guide

Goroka Airport (GKA) is the principal air gateway to Goroka and the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Sitting beside the town at roughly 5,280 feet (1,610 metres) above sea level, the airport connects highland communities, business travellers and visitors heading to the annual Goroka Show.

Airport overview

A compact highlands airport inside the Goroka urban area

Goroka Airport is not a remote wilderness airstrip. Air Niugini's current airport guide places it approximately 1 kilometre from Goroka, making airport-to-hotel transfers much shorter than at many regional airports in PNG.

Aviation data currently lists the airport at about 5,282 feet above mean sea level. That elevation, combined with surrounding highland terrain, gives arrivals a very different feel from the tropical coastal airports of Port Moresby, Alotau or Hoskins.

Flight connections

Port Moresby is the key national connection

Air Niugini

Goroka ↔ Port Moresby

Air Niugini currently sells flights between Goroka (GKA) and Port Moresby (POM). Published availability changes by date, so use the airline's live booking engine rather than relying on a fixed “multiple daily” claim months in advance.

PNG Air

Regional domestic network

PNG Air includes Goroka in its published domestic timetable for the period running through 31 December 2026. Exact sectors and operating days should be checked against the current timetable before booking connections.

Connection planning

Protect international connections

If Goroka is the final domestic leg before an international flight from Port Moresby, leave a sensible connection buffer. Regional schedules can change because of weather, operational disruptions or aircraft rotations.

Highlands flying

Weather matters more than the clock on your ticket

Mountain terrain

Goroka sits in a highland basin surrounded by elevated terrain. Cloud, rain and reduced visibility can affect regional aviation.

Morning flights can be useful

Many travellers prefer an earlier service when available because it leaves more same-day recovery options if operations change. It is a planning strategy, not a guarantee of better weather.

Do not create a tight same-day chain

A Goroka–Port Moresby flight followed immediately by a long-haul international departure creates unnecessary risk if the domestic sector is delayed.

Airport modernization

A new 28-metre air traffic control tower is under development

On 30 April 2026, NiuSky Pacific broke ground on a new purpose-built Air Traffic Control Tower at Goroka Airport. The company says the tower will stand 28 metres high and replace the existing temporary facility.

The project includes upgraded Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems. This is a current infrastructure project, so it is more accurate to describe the tower as under development rather than already operational.

Terminal facilities

Small airport, useful passenger basics

Food

Food and dining listed

Air Niugini's current PNG airports guide lists Food / Dining among Goroka Airport's passenger features. Expect regional-airport scale rather than a large international-terminal restaurant selection.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi is listed

Wi-Fi is also listed as an airport feature. Treat it as a useful convenience rather than something to depend on for critical travel documents—save bookings and contacts offline.

Money

Currency exchange is listed

Air Niugini lists Currency Exchange at Goroka Airport. BSP also operates banking facilities and ATMs in Goroka town, but I could not verify a current BSP ATM specifically inside the airport terminal.

Air Niugini also lists an Executive Club at Goroka. Lounge eligibility depends on airline status, ticket class or program access, so confirm access before assuming it is included with your fare.

Airport transfers

Because the airport is beside town, hotel transfers are short

Bird of Paradise Hotel

Coral Sea Hotels currently says its courtesy shuttle meets all flights into Goroka and takes approximately two minutes to reach the hotel.

Pacific Gardens

Current accommodation listings indicate that Pacific Gardens offers airport transfers when arranged in advance. Confirm pickup directly with the property before flying.

Other transport

Rather than declaring all PMVs or public transport forbidden, choose transport appropriate to your experience, luggage and arrival time. First-time visitors often find a pre-booked hotel or tour transfer simpler.

Arrival sequence

From aircraft door to Goroka town

1

Disembark

Follow ground staff into the domestic terminal and keep your baggage receipt handy if one was issued.

2

Collect baggage

Retrieve checked luggage and confirm all pieces before leaving the terminal area.

3

Meet your driver

Look for your hotel, tour operator or named driver at the agreed meeting point.

4

Reach town quickly

Goroka is approximately 1 km from the airport, so central accommodation can be only a few minutes away by vehicle.

5

Get cash if needed

Use verified banking facilities in town rather than assuming every airport cash service is available at all hours.

6

Confirm onward plans

If continuing into rural Eastern Highlands, reconfirm the driver, guide, road conditions and return timing before leaving Goroka.

September travel

Goroka Show dates: 18–20 September 2026

The airport becomes part of the festival logistics

Papua New Guinea Tourism lists the 2026 Goroka Show for 18–20 September, marking its 70th anniversary. More than 100 cultural groups are expected to participate.

During Show week, flights, hotels, tour vehicles and guides can be much harder to secure. Book the aviation and accommodation components as one itinerary rather than assuming you can arrange the rest after landing.

Eastern Highlands

GKA is the gateway, not the destination itself

Goroka Show

One of Papua New Guinea's largest annual cultural gatherings, held during September.

Asaro cultural visits

Goroka is a common base for arranged cultural excursions associated with the famous Asaro Mudmen traditions.

Coffee country

The Eastern Highlands are an important coffee-growing region, and Goroka is closely connected to the province's agricultural economy.

Money and connectivity

Do not make the airport your only financial or internet plan

Goroka Airport currently lists currency exchange and Wi-Fi, while BSP operates a full Goroka branch with multiple ATMs in town. That gives travellers several options, but service availability can still vary.

Carry some Papua New Guinean Kina (PGK) for markets, guides and smaller businesses, and save essential documents offline before leaving Port Moresby.
