Goroka Airport is not a remote wilderness airstrip. Air Niugini's current airport guide places it approximately 1 kilometre from Goroka, making airport-to-hotel transfers much shorter than at many regional airports in PNG.

Aviation data currently lists the airport at about 5,282 feet above mean sea level. That elevation, combined with surrounding highland terrain, gives arrivals a very different feel from the tropical coastal airports of Port Moresby, Alotau or Hoskins.

A new 28-metre air traffic control tower is under development

On 30 April 2026, NiuSky Pacific broke ground on a new purpose-built Air Traffic Control Tower at Goroka Airport. The company says the tower will stand 28 metres high and replace the existing temporary facility.

The project includes upgraded Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems. This is a current infrastructure project, so it is more accurate to describe the tower as under development rather than already operational.

During Show week, flights, hotels, tour vehicles and guides can be much harder to secure. Book the aviation and accommodation components as one itinerary rather than assuming you can arrange the rest after landing.
