Climate, seasons and travel timing
Papua New Guinea is tropical, but the weather is far from uniform. Coastal lowlands stay warm and humid, the Highlands are much cooler, Port Moresby sits in a pronounced rain shadow, and mountain exposure can make one side of an island dramatically wetter than another.
Season pattern
Papua New Guinea's official tourism site describes May to October as the most popular travel period. Trekking, diving, festivals and Highlands travel are often easier to plan in this window because rainfall is generally lower.
The tourism authority describes November to April as the wetter period, bringing heavier rainfall, greener landscapes and more challenging travel in some remote areas.
Regional microclimates
Elevation keeps the Highlands far cooler than the coast. PNG government climate guidance notes that daytime temperatures commonly remain above about 22°C in many highland areas, while nights can become cold and frost is possible at high elevations.
Travel effect: pack warm evening layers and expect fog or afternoon cloud around valleys and airstrips.
Port Moresby is unusually dry for tropical PNG because of its rain-shadow position. Government climate information places annual rainfall below about 1,300 mm, much lower than many exposed mountain and coastal zones.
Travel effect: hotter, drier conditions can favour city touring and Kokoda access, but drought can stress water and electricity supplies.
Northern and island regions can remain wet outside the classic monsoon pattern because mountain orientation and exposure to prevailing winds strongly affect rainfall.
Travel effect: diving, boating and road plans should be based on the exact province rather than the national season alone.

Weather disruption
Weather in PNG affects more than comfort. Aviation, road travel, river levels, utilities and access to remote communities can all change when conditions deteriorate.
Fog, mountain cloud and thunderstorms can affect airstrips and smaller aircraft. Keep buffer time around remote sectors.
Heavy rain can trigger landslides, flooding and difficult trail conditions. Remote road closures may take time to clear.
Wind, swell and tropical downpours affect small-boat operations. Use reputable operators and do not pressure crews to depart in poor conditions.
Drought can reduce local water availability and strain urban systems, lodges and communities.
Reduced hydropower capacity during drought can contribute to load shedding and power interruptions.
PNG also faces earthquakes, volcanic activity, landslides and other hazards that may compound weather disruption.
2026 conditions
Current Australian travel advice, reviewed on 7 September 2026, reports worsening drought across a number of PNG provinces driven by a significant El Niño event. Conditions are expected to intensify through the remainder of 2026 and into early 2027, affecting food and water security.
The same advisory notes that drought is reducing hydropower generation capacity and contributing to load shedding in Port Moresby. Travellers should therefore treat water, electricity and food availability as practical planning issues, not simply weather statistics.
Weather by activity
The drier part of the year is generally easier for walking, but trail conditions can change rapidly. Check track access and your trekking operator immediately before departure.
Major Highlands events cluster around the mid-year and early spring travel season. Accommodation and flights can be more important constraints than temperature.
PNG supports year-round diving, but visibility, swell and currents vary by region. Milne Bay, Madang, Kavieng and East New Britain should be checked separately.
Surf seasons can run opposite to general sightseeing preferences in some island regions. Plan around swell patterns, not simply “dry season.”
Weather packing
Breathable, quick-dry clothing works well for hot coastal areas.
Carry a proper waterproof shell and dry bag for electronics and documents.
Evenings can feel cold in Mount Hagen, Goroka and higher elevations.
Bring sun protection and effective insect repellent for lowland and coastal travel.
