Tokua Airport (RAB), also widely called Rabaul Airport or New Rabaul Airport, is the main aviation gateway for Kokopo, Rabaul and East New Britain Province. Most visitors arriving for Tavurvur, WWII history, diving, the Baining cultural region or the Duke of York Islands begin their East New Britain journey here.
Airport role
The historic airport at Rabaul was overwhelmed during the major 1994 Tavurvur and Vulcan eruptions. Aviation services subsequently shifted to Tokua, outside the most heavily affected part of the caldera area.
Today, Tokua carries the airport code RAB and functions as the practical entry point for East New Britain's capital, Kokopo, as well as the older town of Rabaul farther around the Gazelle Peninsula.
Air connectivity
Air Niugini currently publishes Rabaul/Tokua in its domestic booking network and is selling RAB–POM travel for 2026. Check its current timetable for the exact operating day and routing.
PNG Air's published timetable runs through the end of 2026, and the airline maintains both a Tokua/Rabaul airport contact and a Kokopo office. Routes can operate through other regional hubs depending on the schedule.
Domestic PNG schedules can involve through-services, intermediate stops or operating-day changes. Check the live airline timetable instead of relying on a static list of “direct” destinations.
Weather and volcanic operations
Heavy rain, thunderstorms and low cloud can disrupt regional operations, especially during severe weather.
Tokua serves one of PNG's most volcanically active provinces. Ash events can affect aviation when authorities or airlines judge conditions unsafe.
If Tokua is the first leg of a same-day international connection in Port Moresby, leave realistic time in case the domestic service is delayed.
A blanket rule that “morning flights are always safer or more reliable” is too strong. Earlier flights can provide more recovery time if disruption occurs, but choose your flight using the current airline timetable and your connection risk.
Terminal expectations
Carry your passport, phone, hotel contact, essential medicine and enough accessible funds for the first transfer rather than assuming every airport service will be available.
Save your hotel reservation, flight details and driver contact offline. Mobile coverage can be useful, but it should not be your only copy of critical travel information.
Domestic baggage allowances vary by airline and fare. Divers and photographers should check limits before reaching the airport rather than planning around a single universal weight figure.

Tokua to Kokopo
Papua New Guinea Tourism currently describes Tokua Airport as about a 10-minute drive from Kokopo. That makes Kokopo the most convenient base for most visitors arriving by air.
Resorts, hotels and tour operators commonly arrange airport pickup. Pre-arranging the transfer is especially useful if you are arriving with dive gear, travelling as a group or continuing to a boat excursion.
Tokua–Kokopo corridor
In May 2026, Papua New Guinea's Department of Works and Highways said the Tokua–Kokopo four-lane road project was progressing and that work was continuing.
Work had paused in several land-dispute sections while construction continued elsewhere along the corridor.
The Works update said road sealing had started on a kilometre of road from Tokua Airport.
The normal Kokopo transfer can be quick, but construction, land issues and local traffic can change actual travel time. Allow extra margin when returning to Tokua for departure.
Continuing to Rabaul
Rabaul remains one of East New Britain's major visitor destinations for Simpson Harbour, Tavurvur, volcanic landscapes and WWII sites, but Kokopo replaced it as the provincial capital following the 1994 eruptions.
If your hotel or tour is in Rabaul, arrange the full Tokua–Rabaul transfer in advance rather than assuming the Kokopo airport shuttle continues automatically.
Duke of York Islands
Collect baggage and meet your pre-arranged driver or accommodation transfer.
PNG Tourism currently describes the airport-to-Kokopo drive as about 10 minutes in normal conditions.
Your island operator will determine the exact launch point based on accommodation, weather and vessel arrangements.
PNG Tourism describes the Duke of York Islands as roughly 45 minutes from Kokopo by boat.
Pack electronics, passport and cash in a waterproof bag before open-boat travel.
Do not schedule a tight same-day island connection immediately after a flight if sea conditions are uncertain.
Scenic approach
Flights in the region can offer impressive views of the Gazelle Peninsula, Blanche Bay, Simpson Harbour and volcanic terrain when cloud and routing cooperate.
Aircraft direction, runway use, weather and routing can change. Do not build the page around a promise that one side of the aircraft always provides Tavurvur views.
If scenery matters, a window seat is the only reliable general recommendation.
Arrival checklist
If connecting to a tour, boat or dive package, message the operator once the aircraft has landed and you have your baggage.
Carry enough Kina or have a plan to obtain it in Kokopo before heading to villages, islands or cash-only activities.
Check the driver's name or accommodation sign rather than entering an unverified vehicle simply because someone approaches you in arrivals.
Suggested East New Britain routes
Base in Kokopo and spend a full day around Rabaul, Tavurvur, Simpson Harbour and WWII sites before returning to your hotel.
Add a day or overnight island trip for snorkelling, village visits and a contrasting maritime experience.
Combine Tavurvur, WWII history, a separate Baining cultural experience and a Duke of York boat trip.
