Nadzab Tomodachi International Airport (LAE) is the main air gateway for Lae and Morobe Province. The airport sits well outside the city along the Highlands Highway and operates from a modern terminal built to handle both domestic and future international traffic.

Why “Tomodachi”?

A major Japan–Papua New Guinea aviation project

Nadzab was comprehensively redeveloped with support from Japan. The name “Tomodachi” means “friend” in Japanese and was adopted to symbolize the relationship between Papua New Guinea and Japan.

The redevelopment included runway strengthening, taxiway and apron work, airport lighting, a new passenger terminal, parking, emergency-service infrastructure and modern aviation systems.

The airport began operating from the new facility in 2023, with PNG Air transitioning first and Air Niugini moving its passenger operations into the new terminal in January 2024.

International status

International-capable does not currently mean international-scheduled

Built for international processing

National Airports Corporation confirmed that Customs, Immigration and Quarantine offices were established in the new terminal while arrangements for regular international passenger transport were being developed.

No current direct international route found

Current 2026 Air Niugini and PNG Air schedules show LAE being used for domestic services. I found no published scheduled international passenger route operating directly into Nadzab.

Plan via Port Moresby unless confirmed otherwise

Overseas travellers should normally expect to enter PNG through the actual international gateway shown on their ticket—commonly Port Moresby—and then take a domestic connection to Lae.

Because LAE has the infrastructure to handle international operations, this can change. Always check your airline's live schedule instead of assuming the airport's “International” name means a direct overseas service exists on your travel date.

Do not build a tight self-transfer unless the itinerary is protected by the airline. International arrival formalities, baggage collection, weather and domestic schedule changes can all consume your connection margin.

The new building is considerably more comfortable than the old terminal, but current authoritative sources do not provide a stable, comprehensive directory of every café, ATM, retail outlet or lounge-access policy.

For that reason, this guide does not promise that a particular ATM, food kiosk or car-rental desk will be operating when you arrive. Bring enough accessible funds and basic refreshments for the onward road journey, particularly if your flight lands late or retail services are closed.
