Advance online permit
Japan appears on ICA's current 30-day Easy Visitor list and is marked as also eligible for the 60-day class.
Current PNG entry routes for Japanese passport holders
Japanese citizens currently have several short-stay visitor options for Papua New Guinea. ICA lists Japan for Visa on Arrival for all passport types and also includes Japan on both the 30-day Easy Visitor Permit and the 60-day Easy Visitor Permit eligibility lists. For travellers who want their permission arranged before departure, the online eVisa route provides a clear advance approval path.

Entry Permit timing
ICA states that an Entry Permit holder must enter Papua New Guinea within six months of the permit being issued.
The permit becomes invalid and another application is required.
The 30-day or 60-day visitor period is measured from physical arrival in Papua New Guinea.
Supporting documents
ICA's current Easy Visitor Permit instructions list a copy of the valid passport biodata page as the stated supporting document for the 30-day class. The final application checklist should always be taken from the live portal and the exact class selected.
The supplied draft treats a separate photo, three months of bank statements, a fixed financial threshold, accommodation vouchers, a CMO cover letter, a sub-100 KB JPG and a paid return ticket as universal mandatory requirements. Current ICA public guidance reviewed for this page does not support presenting that entire bundle as compulsory for every Japanese Easy Visitor application.
Japanese passport rules
ICA's general FAQ states that passports must remain valid for at least six months from the intended date of entry.
Apply and travel using the same Japanese passport unless ICA formally updates or re-evidences the Entry Permit.
The current general ICA guidance reviewed confirms passport validity but does not establish a blanket two-facing-blank-pages rule for every visitor.
Advance eVisa route
An approved eVisa gives you a documented Entry Permit before you reach the airport.
Japan currently appears on both Easy Visitor eligibility lists.
ICA currently states that eVisa applications for the Easy Visitor routes attract a US$50 online lodgement fee.
ICA states that there is no Migration Service Fee payable for the Easy Visitor Permit itself.
Both Easy Visitor routes are single entry, so leaving PNG can end the use of that permit.
Check your passport number, name, visitor class and stay period before travel.
Visa on Arrival
ICA's Visa on Arrival page expressly includes Japan and states “all passport types.”
VOA schedules can change, so check ICA's live page close to departure.
Do not rely on visitor VOA for employment, specialist work or another purpose requiring a different visa class.
Use current ICA or airport information for any VOA charge rather than an outdated third-party fee table.
Keep accommodation and onward-travel details accessible in case immigration officers request them.
VOA eligibility does not remove passport, PNGDAC or immigration inspection requirements.
Return / onward travel
ICA's general FAQ says that evidence of return travel may be requested in some circumstances.
For Japanese travellers, keeping a confirmed return or onward itinerary readily accessible is sensible—especially when using VOA—but the current general ICA guidance does not say every Easy Visitor application must automatically include a paid return-ticket upload.
APEC Business Travel Card
ICA lists Japan among current APEC Business Travel Card participating economies.
ICA says foreign ABTC holders may enter via designated PNG ports including Jacksons International Airport and Tokua.
ABTC facilitates legitimate short-term business travel and is not the same as a tourist visitor permit.
Business travel without ABTC
Japan appears on ICA's current eligible passport schedule for this business class.
This class is valid for 12 months with up to 60 days from each arrival and is not available on arrival.
Visitor and ordinary business permissions do not automatically authorize paid local employment.
Japanese traveller pre-flight checklist
Choose the 30-day eVisa, 60-day eVisa, current VOA route, ABTC or another purpose-specific Entry Permit.
At least six months valid from your intended date of entry.
ICA's 6 August 2026 directive requires all travellers to complete the Digital Arrival Card before boarding-pass issuance.
Keep return/onward and accommodation information available if requested.
Carry any vaccination certificate required by your origin or transit itinerary.
Carry your ABTC or business-purpose evidence when entering for corporate activity.
Printed eVisa approval
Keeping a printed copy of your approved Entry Permit is sensible in case your phone fails, connectivity is unavailable or airport staff want to inspect your permission.
The current public ICA material reviewed for this page does not establish a universal rule that a traveller with only an accessible digital approval must automatically be refused.
Yellow fever
The certificate requirement is aimed at preventing imported infection.
If your route triggers the requirement, carry a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis.
Review all transit airports between Japan and PNG, not only your initial departure point.
Japanese passport misinformation to avoid
Incorrect. ICA currently lists Japan for 30-day eVisa, 60-day eVisa and VOA.
Do not publish a current airport charge unless ICA or the port authority explicitly confirms it.
Not a universal Easy Visitor requirement in the current ICA guidance reviewed.
No universal tourist balance threshold of that amount is published in the current ICA Easy Visitor guidance reviewed.
Not listed as universal Easy Visitor requirements in the current ICA class text reviewed.
Use the live portal's actual upload specifications instead of a blanket third-party rule.
ICA confirms six-month passport validity but not that blanket rule in the current general guidance reviewed.
Carry a paper backup, but a universal hard-copy-only rule is not established in current public ICA guidance reviewed.
Incorrect. ABTC facilitates business travel and does not replace the correct employment authorisation.
