PNG eVisa Passport Documents

Your passport is the central identity document in a Papua New Guinea visa application. The passport number, name, nationality, date of birth and validity used in the form should correspond to the travel document you will actually present when entering PNG.

Passport validity

Count six months from the date you intend to enter Papua New Guinea

ICA's current General FAQ says that a passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you intend to enter Papua New Guinea. This is the clearest current rule to use when checking whether a passport is suitable for travel.

If the passport is close to expiry, renew it before applying where possible. A visa or entry permit cannot safely be planned around a travel document that may no longer meet the entry-validity rule on the date of arrival.

Use the entry date—not the planned departure date. Do not rewrite the rule as “six months remaining after leaving PNG” unless ICA publishes that class-specific requirement.

Many PNG visa classes require a copy of the valid passport biodata page

ICA's live eVisa class descriptions repeatedly list the passport biodata page as core documentary evidence.

Capture the useful page, not just a fragment of it

A passport copy should preserve all information necessary to identify the document and traveller. Keep the complete biodata page visible and avoid cutting through passport numbers, expiry dates, the photograph or the machine-readable area.

Keep the page complete

A small border around the page is preferable to a tight crop that removes printed information or security features.

Control glare

Laminated biodata pages can reflect light. Move the light source or camera until passport numbers and names are easy to read.

Check the saved file

Open the actual exported file after scanning or photographing it. A sharp camera preview can still become blurry after compression.

Machine-readable zone

Keep the MRZ visible, but do not automatically copy its transliteration into every form field

The machine-readable zone (MRZ) at the bottom of many passport biodata pages is useful for identity verification and machine processing. It should remain visible in a complete biodata-page copy.

However, current ICA material reviewed for this page does not publish a universal instruction saying applicants with accented or non-Latin characters must always replace the normal passport spelling with the MRZ transliteration in every eVisa name field.

Follow the field label and your passport. Enter surname and given names as requested by the live form, and use the passport itself as the source document. Do not invent a transliteration rule that ICA has not published.

Check the surname

Use the family name shown on the passport rather than a nickname or shortened version.

Check given names

Do not casually omit middle or additional given names if the form expects the full passport identity.

Check the passport number

Compare every character before submission, especially similar-looking letters and numbers.

Check dates

Verify date of birth, issue date and expiry date against the physical passport.

Check nationality

Use the nationality connected to the passport being used for the application.

Check the ticket name

Airline booking identity should be compatible with the passport that will be presented at check-in.

Check sponsor records

Business and employment letters should use the applicant's correct passport identity.

Save the submitted passport copy

Keep the exact file used in the application with the visa and travel records.

Names, accents and punctuation

Use the passport and the live form—not a made-up “phonetic spelling” rule

Names can contain accents, apostrophes, hyphens, multiple family names or naming structures that do not fit a simple first-name/last-name model. The safest approach is to follow the live ICA field labels and keep the information consistent with the passport.

Do not assume that Müller must always become Mueller, or that every accented name must be rewritten exactly as the MRZ, unless the portal or ICA specifically instructs you to do so.

Blank pages

Do not publish a universal “two facing blank pages” rule without current ICA support

Current ICA material reviewed for this page clearly states the six-month passport-validity requirement, but it does not establish a general rule that every traveller must have two completely blank facing passport pages.

Leave usable space

It is sensible to travel with enough usable passport space for any physical immigration endorsement that may be applied.

Do not invent the number

Avoid stating “two facing blank pages are mandatory” unless ICA publishes that requirement for the relevant route.

Check carrier rules too

Airlines can apply document checks based on immigration databases and destination requirements before boarding.

Passport condition

A visa approval does not repair a damaged travel document

The passport used for travel should remain a valid, usable identity and travel document. Serious damage to the biodata page, laminate, chip area, binding or security features can create problems even when a visa has already been approved.

Current ICA guidance reviewed for this page does not publish a simple rule that every frayed edge or minor cosmetic mark automatically causes refusal. The meaningful question is whether the passport remains valid and acceptable for international travel.

If the biodata page or document integrity is compromised, replace the passport before travelling. Then check whether the visa needs to be re-evidenced or otherwise linked to the new passport.

New or replacement passport

A passport change can affect an existing PNG entry permit

ICA has a formal re-evidencing process for entry permits when a passport is replaced.

Before visa approval

Use the new passport in the application

If you renew before lodging, use the new document's passport number, issue date, expiry and biodata page rather than submitting information from the old passport.

After an entry permit exists

Check re-evidencing

ICA's Entry and Re-entry guidance says a new entry permit can be evidenced for the balance of the existing stay after a new passport is obtained. The passport must have at least six months validity for re-evidencing.

Do not simply travel assuming the old passport number will transfer automatically. Follow ICA's current re-evidencing or visa-update process for the permit you hold.

Dual nationals

Keep one passport identity consistent through the visa and travel process

A dual national can hold more than one valid passport, but a visa application is still tied to the travel document information supplied to ICA.

For practical consistency, use the passport selected for the PNG visa application when checking visa eligibility, making airline bookings where passport details are required, and presenting documents for travel to PNG.

This is a consistency principle, not a published rule that dual nationals are forbidden from carrying another passport. The key issue is that the visa record and entry document should correspond.

File format and size

Use the live ICA upload requirements for the visa class

The eVisa system tells applicants which documents are required after they select a visa class and nationality. Current sources reviewed for this page do not establish one universal rule that every passport biodata page must be PDF/JPG/JPEG and strictly under 10 MB.

Accepted format

Use the file type shown by the current upload field rather than assuming one global format applies to every visa workflow.

Maximum size

Use the current limit displayed for the application. Do not hard-code 10 MB across the whole site without official support.

Readable after compression

Reducing file size should never make the passport number, name, expiry date or other identity fields unreadable.

Avoid turning sensible preparation advice into unsupported ICA rules

Every accented name must be replaced with its MRZ transliteration. Follow the live field labels and passport; do not invent a universal transliteration rule.
Any passport wear causes automatic border rejection. Serious damage affecting document validity is the real concern; minor wear is not automatically the same thing.
The old visa automatically transfers to a replacement passport. Check ICA's re-evidencing or update process when the passport changes.
