Before Applying for a PNG e-Visa

Do the eligibility and document checks before you open the application form. The useful preparation is not inventing special filenames or chasing unofficial technical limits; it is choosing the correct visa class, checking your passport, gathering the evidence that applies to that class and making sure your travel details agree.

Work out which PNG visa route applies to you

Do not begin by assuming that every visitor uses the same “PNG eVisa.” Papua New Guinea has multiple visa classes, and the application route can depend on nationality, passport type and what you intend to do in the country.

ICA's visitor guidance says travellers from eligible countries may be able to lodge electronically, while travellers who are not eligible for the relevant arrival/electronic route may need to use another application process. citeturn0search1turn0search6

Your purpose matters. A holiday, family visit, business meeting, paid employment, sporting activity and film project are not interchangeable immigration purposes. Select the visa class that covers the activity you will actually undertake.

Passport audit

Check the passport before building the application around it

ICA states that a passport used to travel to Papua New Guinea needs at least six months of validity from the date you intend to enter the country. citeturn0search2

Validity

Count forward from your intended entry date. The rule is not “six months after your planned departure,” so do not reject an otherwise valid passport using the wrong calculation.

Biodata

Read the passport number, full name, date of birth, nationality, issue date and expiry date directly from the document you intend to travel with.

Passport changes

If you expect to renew or replace the passport before travel, resolve that before applying where practical. Entry permits are tied to passport information and ICA has a separate re-evidencing process when passports change. citeturn0search3

About blank pages: this page does not impose a universal “two blank pages” rule because the current ICA general FAQ used for this guide does not state that requirement. Check your visa class, airline and any transit-country requirements separately.

Build the evidence pack

Gather documents for your visa class—not a generic internet checklist

ICA's document requirements differ across visa classes. Start with the live class description, then prepare the files it actually asks you to provide.

Passport evidence

  • Clear passport biodata page
  • Details readable at normal zoom
  • Passport number not obscured
  • File belongs to the correct applicant

Travel evidence

  • Intended arrival date
  • Expected departure or onward plan
  • Accommodation or host details where requested
  • Travel purpose consistent with visa class

Class-specific evidence

  • Sponsor or invitation letter where required
  • Business supporting documents where required
  • Medical or character documents if applicable
  • Other approvals for specialist visa classes

ICA's Easy Visitor Permit (30 Day) page, for example, lists a passport biodata copy in its application steps, while other visa classes can require additional supporting evidence. citeturn0search6

Return and onward travel

Have your travel plan available, but check whether evidence is required in your case

A confirmed return ticket should not be described as a universal upload requirement for every online application. ICA's current FAQ says evidence of return travel may be requested in some circumstances. citeturn0search2

Even when the portal does not ask you to upload a ticket at the first stage, keep your itinerary accessible. Your intended dates should make sense alongside the visa class and the length of stay you request.

Digital file preparation

Readable files matter more than invented “portal rules”

Prepare clean digital copies before starting so you are not scanning documents halfway through the application. Open each file after saving it and confirm that the entire document is visible, upright and readable.

This guide does not claim that ICA universally requires filenames with underscores, forbids spaces or hyphens, caps every passport image at 500 KB, or caps every supporting file at 2 MB. Those limits are not established by the current ICA sources reviewed for this page.

Follow the upload control you see. If the live portal specifies an accepted format or maximum file size, that on-screen requirement takes priority. Resize or convert only when necessary, and keep enough image quality for the document to remain legible.

Health and character

Check whether your circumstances trigger extra evidence

Not every short-term visitor needs the same medical or police documents. ICA says the requirement depends on factors including the purpose and duration of the visit. citeturn0search9

Health

ICA requires applicants to meet health standards and may request medical documentation for particular applications. Check the requirements of your actual entry category. citeturn0search9

Character

Criminal convictions or current criminal prosecution must be disclosed. ICA warns that failure to disclose relevant information may affect the entry permit. citeturn0search9

Longer stays

ICA states that police certificates are required for applicants aged 16 or over, including dependants, who intend to travel to PNG for six months or more. citeturn0search9

Account and payment readiness

Know how ICA handles the fee before you reach checkout

ICA's MICA system is used for online migration-service payments. ICA says card processing is handled by its certified third-party processor, Kina Bank, and that card information is not stored by ICA. citeturn0search0

Visa fees may be expressed using a USD-equivalent rate, but ICA states that online payments are converted and processed in Papua New Guinean Kina (PGK). The system provides the payable total before payment details are entered. citeturn0search0turn0search6

Do not rely on a copied fee from an old article. Check the current visa class and the total shown by ICA before authorising payment.

Application security

Use an email account and device you control

Application decisions, account verification and support communication can depend on reliable access to your email and account.

Email Use an address you monitor and check the spam folder for account messages.
Password Use a unique password and store it securely.
Connection Avoid submitting sensitive passport and card information over an untrusted public network.
Records Keep your application reference, receipt and submitted documents together.

ICA notes that repeated invalid login attempts or access from an unknown location can result in a MICA account being blocked, in which case the applicant should contact ICA. citeturn0search0

Resolve the uncertain item before paying

A missing hotel booking does not always mean you must rush into a non-refundable reservation, and an uncertain visa category should not be solved by choosing the nearest-sounding option. Work out what the live ICA process requires for your circumstances first.

If your passport is close to the six-month threshold, your travel purpose is mixed, you have previous immigration or criminal-history issues, or the live portal asks for evidence you do not understand, use ICA's current guidance or enquiry channel before lodging.
