Rabaul was the old provincial centre, but the 1994 eruptions of Tavurvur and Vulcan forced most services to relocate to Kokopo. The change reshaped the whole visitor geography of East New Britain.

Today, Kokopo has the stronger concentration of accommodation, offices, restaurants, transport services and organised tours. It also sits closer to Tokua Airport than Rabaul, which makes it an easier base for travellers who want to explore the wider Gazelle Peninsula without moving hotels every night.

Mask & Warwagira Festival: 8–10 July 2026

The 2026 Mask & Warwagira Festival is scheduled for 8–10 July at Takubar Showground in Kokopo. The programme celebrates Tolai, Baining and Pomio traditions through masked dance, storytelling, craft and ritual performance.

Festival travel changes the character of Kokopo. Hotels become busier, transport demand rises and some cultural activities happen at fixed times rather than on a normal tour schedule. If the festival is the reason for your trip, organise flights and rooms before planning the smaller excursions.
