Identify your entry date
Use the calendar date on which you expect to pass PNG immigration, including any overnight flight or International Date Line effect.
Passport check · six-month rule · visa matching · replacement passports
Papua New Guinea Immigration requires travellers to present a valid travel document, and its current guidance is clear on the main passport test: your passport should remain valid for at least six months from the date you intend to enter Papua New Guinea.
Check this before paying for a visa or locking in non-refundable travel. A passport renewal can change the passport number and biographical details attached to an existing Entry Permit, so travellers with a replacement passport should resolve the permit record before departure.
The central passport rule
ICA's current FAQ states that a passport must be valid for at least six months from the date the traveller intends to enter Papua New Guinea. The calculation is tied to entry, not to the date you submit an online application and not automatically to your planned departure date.
Use the calendar date on which you expect to pass PNG immigration, including any overnight flight or International Date Line effect.
Your passport expiry should fall at least six months after the intended date of entry. If it is close to the boundary, renewing before applying can reduce uncertainty.
A later travel date can change the calculation. If your trip is postponed, run the validity check again before departure.
What is official — and what is often overstated
ICA expressly publishes the requirement that a passport be valid for at least six months from the intended entry date.
ICA's current general guidance does not publish a universal rule requiring every traveller to have two entirely blank facing visa pages.
Even with an electronic permit, keep usable space available for any border endorsements. Do not present a passport that is full or cannot accept required immigration markings.
There is no need to invent a special PNG cosmetic standard. A passport must be valid and usable as an approved travel document.
If the identity page, machine-readable zone, photograph, laminate, pages or binding are materially damaged, contact the issuing authority and airline rather than risking travel.
ICA notes that passports are the most common and preferred travel document, while some other approved travel documents may be accepted depending on the circumstances.
Portal accuracy
When completing a PNG visa application, copy the passport number, nationality, date of birth, issue date and expiry date carefully. Names should follow the fields and instructions presented by the live ICA application system.
Special characters can appear differently in the machine-readable zone (MRZ), but that does not justify inventing a different legal identity. Use the passport and the portal's field instructions as your reference.
Renewed or replaced passport
This is an important correction to common online advice. ICA publishes a formal re-evidencing of Entry Permits process.
A replacement passport normally has a different passport number. Resolve the Entry Permit evidence before travelling rather than simply arriving with mismatched records.
ICA states that when an applicant obtains a new passport, a new Entry Permit can be issued for the balance of the period of stay.
ICA says re-evidencing for an Entry Permit holder outside PNG can be undertaken at the nearest PNG Mission or Post, which must obtain approval from ICA Waigani.
Entry Permit timing
ICA's entry and re-entry guidance states that an Entry Permit holder must enter PNG within six months of the Entry Permit being issued. Failure to enter within that period renders the Entry Permit invalid and a further application is required.
That six-month permit-entry window should not be confused with the separate rule requiring the passport itself to remain valid for at least six months from the intended date of entry.
Before airline check-in
ICA says foreign visitors need a visa, although eligible travellers may obtain a visa on arrival. Travellers who are not eligible must obtain the appropriate visa before travel.
The August 2026 ICA directive requires all travellers to complete PNGDAC before a boarding pass is issued.
ICA's FAQ says evidence of return travel may be requested in some circumstances as part of the visa application process. Visitor applicants must also demonstrate an intention to leave PNG at the end of their stay.
eVisa evidence
Keep the Entry Permit or Authority to Travel accessible even when mobile data or airport Wi-Fi is unavailable.
A paper copy is a sensible backup for airline and border checks, particularly during long multi-sector journeys.
Current ICA public guidance does not support a universal statement that border officers refuse all electronic visa evidence shown on a smartphone.
PNGDAC
PNGDAC is separate from your visa. ICA introduced it as the electronic passenger declaration and, in August 2026, instructed international airlines and check-in personnel that it is a mandatory pre-arrival requirement for all persons travelling to PNG.
The current ICA homepage describes online submission as available up to 72 hours before arrival. Complete it before check-in so the airline can verify the required pre-travel declaration.
Common passport problems
Renew the passport before travel and then ensure any visa or Entry Permit record is correctly linked or re-evidenced as required.
Contact ICA or use the relevant correction process. Do not alter an official approval document yourself.
Check the passport's biographical data and the portal instructions. Resolve material identity discrepancies before travel.
Ask the passport-issuing authority whether replacement is required, especially if the identity page, MRZ, photograph or security features are affected.
Check ICA's re-evidencing procedure instead of assuming the permit is automatically void or automatically transferred.
Recalculate passport validity and confirm that the Entry Permit is still within its permitted entry window.
Passport validity FAQ
ICA's current FAQ says your passport needs to be valid for at least six months from the date you intend to enter Papua New Guinea.
No. ICA's published wording ties the requirement to the date you intend to enter PNG.
ICA's current general public guidance does not state a universal two-facing-blank-pages rule. You should nevertheless have usable passport space for any border endorsements that may be required.
ICA has a re-evidencing process. A new Entry Permit may be evidenced in the new passport for the remaining permitted period. Travellers outside PNG can contact the nearest PNG Mission or Post, subject to ICA approval.
Do not assume that carrying both documents resolves the immigration record. Confirm the correct re-evidencing or replacement procedure with ICA before departure.
Keeping a printed backup is sensible, but current ICA public guidance does not establish a universal rule that electronic evidence displayed on a phone is always unacceptable.
ICA describes online submission as available up to 72 hours before arrival. Its August 2026 directive requires completion before a boarding pass is issued.
Yes. ICA states that evidence of return travel may be requested in some circumstances during the visa application process, and visitor applicants must intend to leave PNG at the end of their stay.
